Stevie Nicks And Radio Honor Tom Petty And The
Heartbreakers
While on break from Fleetwood Macs "Say You Will "Tour, Stevie Nicks was onhand to personally present The Radio Music Legend Award to friend, confidant and musical influence Tom Petty and his band, The Heartbreakers. In her speech,Stevie stated " I only have a few moments to do this so....When I first began to get everything together to make my first solo album, I asked "Can I Get Tom Petty To Produce It, Everyone said No because he was extremely busy, So then I said, Well can I get Tom's producer, Jimmy Iovine, So I did and that is how I met Tom and did Stop Dragging My Heart Around.....Yes....He not only started out as my greatest musical influence, but today he's STILL my greatest musical influence........So, with great honor, I present The Legend Award To Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers."
Tom Petty was a major influence on Stevie Nicks yet again in 2000 while she was preparing material for an album that would later become "Trouble In Shangri-La". While having dinner together, Stevie asked Tom if he would write this song she had an idea for. He replied "Absolutely not. Stevie you are one of the most talented song writers I know, so you get up and go home and write that song yourself as only you can." That song became the single "That Made Me Stronger". Stevie incorporated their dinner conversation from that night into the lyrics of that song writing... "Well, you know me better than I know myself. Can you write this for me....he said no you write your songs yourself...well, that made me stronger, it made me hold on to me."
